The Adventures and Misadventures of a Neer Do Well Artist Living in Baltimore.

My Photo
Name:Gail Willis
Location:Baltimore, Maryland, United States

I am a visual artist and writer living in Baltimore. I don't have any artist friends. Frankly, artists scare me, there so darn flaky. The above picture is either of me or proof that I'm a pretty decent artist. My goal is to be a self sufficient artist, whereas I wouldn't have to do something else in the day in order to eke out an existence. I also like to attend various cultural events around town. I go to plays, the symphony, etc. Also, I have Asperger's Syndrome. I found this out recently and it has explained a heck of a lot as to why I am as I am.

Yesterday I did something a little different I forgoed my usual Friday end of work week routine of eating Orange Chicken at that place that has the perpetual opening day special of 3.95. Instead I tried the Friday Fish Fillet Special at McDonald's. It was ok...but it was no Orange Chicken! I'll have to go back next week and have my usual... there's nothing like Orange Chicken on Friday night!

Another great thing happened yesterday my books from Amazon.com arrived! I now have in my possesion, The Complete Book of Flower Fairies by Cicely Mary Barker. I greatly admire her work. I want to make fairies that are as magical in look as hers were a century ago.

Recently, I have developed an affinity for the works of Pre-Raphaelite artists. Not surprisingly Barker also admired the works of the Pre-Raphaelites as well. There's something indescribable about that Victorian art movement that I find magical and ephemeral.

My favorite Pre-Raphaelite artists so far are Dante Gabriel Rossetti(1828-1882) and John William Waterhouse aka JW Waterhouse (1849-1917). Waterhouse's work reminds me of my all time favorite artist Maxfield Parrish (1870-1966). It appears to me that JW Waterhouse influenced Maxfield Parrish's work although I can't prove it..

A good site to get a basic precursor on Pre-Raphelite art is The Pre-Raphelite Brotherhood A good site to explore the works of the Pre-Raphaelites is the tongue and cheek named site, Indescent Exposure Another good site to explore there work is The Magic Circle

Right now it's rainy in beautiful downtown Baltimore. I always feel like taking a nap whenever it rains. So instead of napping I thought I'd write something today. At this moment I'm kind of in a Moby mode...

Here's my political gripe: I'm upset at the way that Bush is handling the country. I feel as though he's in the pocket of Big Business, he's their boy. How can any right thinking person allow for drinking water to be contaminated with arsenic. Yes, I know that arsenic is a naturally occuring mineral that shows up in water. However, the levels that he's oking are far and above normal standards. He's just oking it to placate the mineral people. And another thing I'm upset at the potential for him allowing for the drilling of oil Alaskan wildlife reserves. I'm starting to feel as everything sacred to the environment is being pissed on by big business and there towel boy, our Supreme Court appointed president, George Bush. Yeah, that's right I'm an environmentalist card carrying member of the Sierra Club and I'm mad as hell!!!

I know I have'nt writen anything in several days. Right now I am giving serious consideration towards looking for another job. In fact I've posted my resume at couple of sites already. The job I have now is not very intellectually stimulating. I would like to work in a research lab maybe doing Immunology or my favorite Microbiology. I am also giving serious consideration towards taking the Registry exam for Medical Technology. If I were to sign up for it I would probably take the exam at the end of the year.

It's very late and I'm about to turn in to bed. The one thought that permeates my brain is why do we belive what the waethermen tell us? It's impossible to predict what Mother Nature is going to do, and yet we believe them time after time and get duped each time. Yep, I'm still a little miffed about the weathermen's predictions of the STORM OF THE CENTURY that never materialized. My boyfriend says that I have a tendency to over react whenever I hear bad weather might occur. I can't help it!! They (the media) hyped this snow up so much that you would have thought that the end of the world was near. If I want an accurate weather forecast next time I'll just look outside my window!!!

I hope I did not come off as some sort of a goody-goody about the Jehova's Witnesses. Basically, I am against people proselytizing there religion to me. Even though I am against that I do not want to create any bad Karma by being mean to them or anyone else. Whenever I see them I say, "Hi." to them if they have said, "Hi" to me. I usually then ask to select a tract. No one so far has objected to showing me the covers of there tracts and then letting me select the one I want. After I select one I walk away very very fast. I'm an artist and I find that the covers of there tracts are often times nicely illustrated with various people and animals in different poses. The Jehova's Witnesses have unwittingly supplied me with free reference material for my artwork.

My boyfriend and I do not live together. I feel that it would be best for us to wait till after we are married before we live together. Also I don't believe in pre-marital sex as a choice for me. He has'nt really complained about my stance on the living together and the sex issue. Well, he has'nt complained so loudly that he has left me because he disagrees with my personal beliefs.

Personally, I do not feel that it is wrong for unmarried people to live together or sleep together,it's a free country after all. It's just that I would prefer to wait. I hope no one thinks I'm a little strange because of my beliefs. In actuality they are not religiously based but personally based. Basically, I just made a personal choice to wait.

As far as religion is concerned I'm not a Christian. I'm just your basic variety of tree hugging hippie Wiccan. My choice of religion has nothing to do with being dissatisfied with Christianity. I never was a Christian to begin with. When I was growing up my family never went to church. We were basically free thinkers. Both of my parents were artists. When I was 10 or 11 my father gave me a bible and basically said you can choose to believe what's in this book or not. Whatever your choice is that's your choice. I'll support you just the same.

The way I see it people have different beliefs and should be allowed to believe what ever they want. That is of course as long as it does not infringe on my personal safety or the safety of others.

I'm probably the only person I know who actuality stops says hello and takes tracts from Jehova's Witnesses. Sure, I don't hold the same religious beliefs they do, but they are human just the same. They've got feelings just like anyone else does. Just because I don't share the same beliefs as another does not give me or anyone else the right to invalidate their belief system by being mean to them. Afterall, everyone has a right to there own personal choices.

Today I just started wondering if it's too soon or to late to start booking a hall for my wedding a well as finding a dress. David and I plan to marry two years from now in the fall. I wish I knew someone to ask. All of my friends are single and my sibilings are single too. The only people I can think to ask would be my aunts and uncles but it's been quiet a while since they tied the know. The majority of them married in the 50's and 60's. Come to think of it all of my cousins are single to. I guess I get to be the first person in my generation to marry as opposed to shack up with some guy.

Believe it or not I just got back from seeing a play at Center Stage. I go there a lot because well, I have to. I have a subsctiption there. I also used to work there. The play I saw tonight was Peter Weiss' The Investigation. The play took place in a courtoom in Frankfort, West Germany 1963-1965. It was about the trial of 14 former S.S. Officers and a former prisoner instrumental in camp operation at Auschwitz. So based on this short description you can probably tell that the play was extremely serious in tone. This play was quiet a departure from the usual fare that Artistic Director Irene Lewis usually directs. Irene mainly likes to direct light comedies and she's really good at it.
