The Adventures and Misadventures of a Neer Do Well Artist Living in Baltimore.

My Photo
Name:
Location: Baltimore, Maryland, United States

I am a visual artist and writer living in Baltimore. I don't have any artist friends. Frankly, artists scare me, there so darn flaky. The above picture is either of me or proof that I'm a pretty decent artist. My goal is to be a self sufficient artist, whereas I wouldn't have to do something else in the day in order to eke out an existence. I also like to attend various cultural events around town. I go to plays, the symphony, etc. Also, I have Asperger's Syndrome. I found this out recently and it has explained a heck of a lot as to why I am as I am.

MORNING COMMUTE:
This morning I am late again for work. I left out early so that I could catch either the #10 bus or a cab. I even tried calling a cab on my cell phone as I waited for the bus. I guess I will have to get up even earlier to catch the #10 bus since I have now given up hope of the #20 bus ever arriving at its scheduled time. To sum it all up I hate being late for work despite leaving out early. I suppose another option I can explore is calling a cab before I leave out for work. That way a cab would possibly be right there waiting for me. Or perhaps even scarier I could leave out an hour earlier to catch the bus....

WHAT I AM WEARING:
Today, I have on blue slacks, a yellow ochre turtleneck, a dark multi-coloured v-neck sweater, and New Balance 653 shoes.

This morning it almost looked as though I would be on time for work. Unfortunately, there was a fire near Beaver Dam road and all light rail passengers had to depart the train at the Timonium stop and wait for a shuttle bus. I was so close to being on time! Oh, well maybe tomorrow everything will work out....

WHAT I AM WEARING:
Today, I have on blue slacks. Yes, slacks not jeans. I also have on a light blue v-neck sweater that has traces of silver glitter on it along with a purple turtle neck that has a leaf design on it. The shoes on my feet are Nike MaxAir.

MORNING COMMUTE:
Today, it is bitter cold outside. I nearly felt as though I was in danger of developing frost bite. The bus I was on broke down and there was no heat on it. I could have walked down the street to the light rail station but decided to stay inside the tepid warmth of the bus. This I felt was better than going outside into what felt like the arctic.

Later in the morning while I was on the light rail heading for work some guy said, “Hey, shortie can I get your number. Yeah, you in the dreads.” I assumed he was talking to someone else because men rarely notice me. Then when I got off the train I realised that I was the only one wearing dreadlocks. How odd... He must have been either on drugs or drunk.

WHAT I AM WEARING:
Today, I have on blue slacks, a blue turtleneck, New Balance 653 shoes and my favourite sweater of blue, beige, and white. It is the first time this season that I have had it on.

Today, I watched more of my Doctor Who Series 2 DVD featuring David Tennant as the Doctor and Billie Piper as Rose. Here is my quick reviews of the episodes I watched.

Rise of the Cybermen
This episode is about the origin of the Cybermen occuring on a parrellel Earth. It was a very gripping episode

Age of Steel
Wow! Roses boyfriend, the wimpy Mickey, becomes a hero and decides to stay behind on parallel Earth to fight the cybermen. Little Mickey has finally grown up! This episode was fabulous!

The Idiots Lantern
This one had something to do about the rise of television, Queen Elizabeths coronation and an alien that lived in the TV. Loved Roses 1950’s outfit. She looked very Barbie. The episode was ok, nothing to write home about...

This evening I tried to watch the TV show Heroes online. When the show first came on earlier in the season I found it to be boring and slow moving. However, since recently hearing that Christopher Eccleston has joined the cast I have to see if his presence has improved the show.

I know some of you are probably saying, Christopher Who? Well, Christopher Eccleston used to play Doctor Who before David Tennant took over the role last season. I have to say right here and now that trying to watch the show on the NBC website with my dial up connection was a lesson in futility. I really have to look into finding a broadband provider for my Macbook laptop.... Luckily, I switched over to You Tube where I watched his debut. What a debut! I hope he sticks around for the long run.

I took the #10 bus at 5:56am. I am on time! From here on I will have to forget about taking the #20 bus.

WHAT I AM WEARING:
Today, I have on New Balance 653 shoes, blue jeans, a denim shirt, a chenile sweater of denim blue, red, and white. This sweater is one of the heaviest pieces of clothing I own. Its right up there with my Doctor Who sweatshirt which is so thick that I sometimes actually sweat while wearing it.WALKING STATS

MORNING COMMUTE:
This morning I left out the door five minutes early. Despite this I am still late. I was hoping to catch a bus that arrives earlier than the #20. I suppose I will have to bite the bullet and leave out twenty minutes early.

The only problem leaving out twenty minutes early would be filling in time until the train arrives. I do not know what I could do for twenty minute. I suppose I could eat breakfast at McDonald’s. The only problem I can see with that is the possibilty that it would be too early in the morning for McDonald’s to be open.

MORNING COMMUTE:
This morning I am on time work. I bypassed taking the bus and flagged down the first cab I saw. Oddly, the driver did not have change for a $5. So he let me keep the $5. It was very nice of him to do that. He was a chubby light skinned man that wore a tam. He kind of reminded me of my Uncle Henry.

OSCAR NEWS
I felt sad that Dreamgirls did not get nominated for best picture.

I am very surprised and happy that former child actor, Jackie Earl Haley got nominated for best supportig actor. The movie I last saw him in was The Bad News Bears.

MORNING COMMUTE:
The #20 bus showed up at 6:10 instead of its posted arrival time of 6:02.

This all makes me wonder who exactly is running the Bush division? It is called this because the Bus originates from Bush street. All I want to know is if they care that they are running buses that are consistently late? I can not wait until the Spring when we get a new driver. I can not take this inconsistency any more!

This little rant stems from an incident this morning where a cabbie refused to drive in the opposite direction that he was driving. If he had drove me I would have been on time for work and would not have had to take the dreaded #20 bus.

CONCERN OF THE DAY:
I just realized today that my city of Baltimore is now being run by black women. Our Mayor Sheila Dixon, the city council president, Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, and the State’s Attorney Pat Jessamy. This little fact is OK with me because I am a woman.

MORNING COMMUTE:
It snowed last night. It was not too bad navigating the streets. Despite this I took a cab instead of a bus. I got the elderly cabbie that has the sad hound dog eyes. I think he might be in his 60’s or 70’s. I only see him working in the early morning hours. He also seems confused when you give him directions. I think he may have Alzeheimers or is just faking the confusion to get out of driving according to passengers suggestions.

WHAT I AM WEARING:
Today, I have on blue jeans, a white turtleneck, a blue snowflake sweater with glitter on it, and New Balance 653 shoes.

Sunday, January 21, 2007

This morning I saw the largest number of people ever waiting to catch the light rail train. I counted twenty four people. Usually there is just me and another person waiting for the train. I wonder if a train broke down and caused a back up? This is all just so unusual for a Sunday morning.

VISITING MY DAD
After Church I thought it would be nice to visit my father and pick up my copy of Doctor Who-The Complete Second Series that I ordered from Amazon.com last month. I wanted to get over his house and leave before the snow started.

First off it was bitter cold outside. The #91 bus that was supposed to arrive at 12:35pm and did not show up neither did the 1:10pm bus. The bus finally showed up at 1:55pm. I am afraid that I might have caught frost bite waiting for that bus.

I got home via a cab driven by some Middle Eastern man who seemed very apprehensive about driving in the snow. While driving me home he seemed fascinated by the colour of my lips. He kept asking me about them. I think he might have either been drunk or on drugs.

When I got home I watched for the first time ever, David Tennant as Doctor Who. He was very likeable. Th first episode I saw was The Christmas Invasion.

SATURDAY NETFLIX NIGHT

DonnieDarko
Originally uploaded by willisgirl.

This evening I watched Donnie Darko. The movie starred Jake Gyllenhaal in the title role. I rented this movie because it was amongst the ones recommended to me according to the types of movies I previously rented on Netflix.

Overall, I found it to be brilliant. It was amongst the most thought provoking movies I have ever seen. In fact after watching it I had to see it again. I even went to web sites to further research the meaning and imagery used in the movie. In my research I learned that according to the director of the movie it was all about a tangent universe branching off of the primary universe. To me his explanation did not make much sense and bordered on the rantings of a mad man. Besides, in the movie there was no mention of any of this. I prefer to view the movie as Its a Wonderful Life done in reverse. Meaning that with Its a Wonderful Life George Bailey is shown how the world would be like if he was never born. In Donnie Darko, Darko, is shown what the world would be like if he survived a jet engine crashing through his bedroom.

After seeing this movie I want to buy it and make it a part of my dvd collection. Below is the original movie trailer to Donnie Darko. It clocks in at 2:22 minutes.

Also after seeing the film I was reminded of the breathtakingly haunting remake of the Tears For Fears song Mad World done by Gary Jules. The song appears at the end of the movie. It fits in nicely with the ending and seemed so apropos. In case you have never heard the Gary Jules version of Mad World I have included it below.

MORNING COMMUTE:
I was late again for work. Damn the MTA!

MAUREEN MCGOVERN AT THE BSO
This evening I went to the BSO mainly because I have season tickets. I think I like going there because it gives me something to do and to write about. Anyway, right here and now I should state I know absolutely nothing about Maureen McGovern other than she sang the Academy Award winning theme to the classic 1972 disaster movie, The Poseiden Adventure. The name of the song was The Morning After. So coming into tonights show I had no idea what to expect. All I knew going in was that the show would feature music from legendary Broadway composer, Richard Rodgers. So I figured at the very least I should hear some warm and familiar songs that I know and love.

First off I have to say that this has to have been hands down the worst show I have seen thus far at the BSO this year. The whole fiasco was reminiscent of my experience of seeing The Red Hot Chilli Peppers last year at Virgin Fest. The Chili Peppers while at Virgin Fest played everything but the hits they were known for. Tonights show at the BSO was soley for the delight of Mizz McGovern. Instead of singing the hit music that Richard Rodgers is known for she decided to sing obscure Richard Rodgers songs that SHE loved. To be fair she did do a very rushed 3 minute montage of Richard Rodgers better known songs from South Pacific, The King and I, Carousel, and The Sound of Music. I thought that perhaps later in the show she would revisit those songs with longer version. But Nooo! Mizz McGovern then decided to do only Richard Rodgers songs SHE liked, damn what the audience came there for. I will never again as I live see another show featuring Mizz Self Indulgent Maureen McGovern.

MORNING COMMUTE:
This morning a miracle occured, the #20 bus was actually on time. So thus I caught the Hunt Valley train on time and as a result was on time for work.

THE BIRTHDAY CLUB
It appears that the Birthday Club is up and running again. Yesterday, co worker Alexis, gave me $95 that they collected from the members. This was both a relief and a surprise to me. It was a relief because I feel funny about the possibilty of them getting cake for my birthday because Im diabetic. I always feel weird about watching people eat cake when I cannot without dire consequences. If I joined in eating the cake I would find that I after a couple of hours I would feel uncontrollably drowsy.

Oh, and it was a surprise because my birthday was a couple of weeks ago! All in all I am glad that they opted to give cash instead of cake. Thank you Birthday Club!

MORNING COMMUTE:
The bus I take in the morning is supposed to arrive at 6:02am but it never arrives on time. It is always five to ten minutes late. Since it is usually late it causes me in turn be late for work. My main objective in catching the #20 bus in the morning is so that I can catch the light rail to work. The way that our chronically late driver is going I would be on time for work everyday if I had to catch the train going in the opposite direction to where I am heading. It seems that she always arrives just in time for anyone who had to catch a south bound train. However, for those of us who have to catch a north bound train we are out of luck because that particular train is usually pulling off just as she arrives.

Personally, I do not understand why the bus driver is always late. There is not a heck of a lot of traffic going on at six in the morning. All I know is that I hope that the new driver we will be getting will be more conscientious about following the bus schedule. I know that we will be getting a new driver because every year like clockwork the MTA switches drivers in the spring and then again in the fall.

WHAT I AM WEARING:
Today, I have on blue jeans, Nike MaxAir shoes, a black turtleneck, and a fair isle knit sweater of olive green, blue, white, and, ecru.

The UK is trying to recruit Morrissey to write a song for them for some European song contest. Are they mad? Who would recruit Morrisey also known as Miserable Morrisey to write songs for them? The guy is known for churning out depressing songs.

Despite the above paragraph I am Smiths fan as well as a Morrissey fan. My all time favourite over the top maudlin Morrissey lyric comes from his tenure with The Smiths. Its from the song, There is a Light that Never Goes out. The lyric is as follows:
and if a double decker bus
crashes into us
to die by your side
Is such a heavenly way to die

Whenever, I hear that lyric I can not help but laugh at the over the topness of it. Then again what do I know maybe Steven Patrick Morrissey can pull it off.

If it were my choice to choose who would write a song for the UK I would choose someone like Paul McCartney. I suppose right now he is probably very busy going through his divorce with Heather Mills. Other possiblities would be Robyn Hitchcock or maybe XTC’s lead singer/songwriter Andy Partridge. To the best of my knowledge Hitchcock and Partridge are currently not very busy.

Any way just for the heck of it below I have included the original video to The Smiths song, There is a Light that Never Goes Out.

Since I had the day off I watched a Netflix movie that recently arrived. The movie I watched was The Graduate. I ordered it because I saw Rumour Has It... a couple of weeks ago. Also it has been years since I last saw The Graduate. It was still as funny as I recalled it being.

One thing in the movie that I forgot about, that was really cool, was the montage scene done to Simon and Garfunkels, The Sounds of Silence. It was like watching a music video before music videos existed. After watching that I am not surprised that Mike Nichols got a Best Director Oscar for The Graduate.

Another thing that struck me was that Benjamin Braddock, the protagonist in the film played by Dustin Hoffman appeared to not have any friends his own age. The only people he seemed to associate with were his parents friends. No wonder Mrs. Robinson made a play for him.

Immediately, after watching the movie I searched through my vast archive of cd’s and found Simon and Garfunkels Greatest Hits and like the 59th Street Bridge Song, I felt groovy.

This morning I went to Church. I mainly went because I knew that it would be a Martin Luther King Jr themed service. They do one every year on the Sunday closest to his birthday. This year near the end of the service we gathered in a circle around the sanctuary and wrote on a piece of coloured crepe paper our hopes. Then we all held hands and sang, We Shall Overcome. When the service was over we tied the crepe papers onto the gates of the Church. I have to say that this was the most creative service that I have ever attended at First Unitarian. I liked it a lot.

THE NEW SUPERMARKET
Ever since I first saw the signs alerting passerbys to a new Superfresh opening I have to admit I sceptical. I was sceptical as to whether or not it was going to happen. The signs have been up since about December of 2005. I know because I would pass them every Sunday on my way to Church. So imagine my surprise when I walked by and the store was actually up and running. It really was not a cruel joke afterall! Superfresh actually opened a store on Charles Street! I thought it never would happen. All I can say is Yippee! I can now do a little light grocery shopping after Church.

I found the movie to be rather engaging. The ending however was very sad. The anime movie was about the lifestory of a fictional Japanese actress. It was told in a very unique manner. Two of the characters that she was telling the story of her life to were featured as background characters in the story she ewas telling. I found this to be a very interesting way of telling a story. The ending of the movie was sad. It turns out that the man she loved had died and she never learned what the key he gave her opened to. All he told her was that it was the key to the most important thing. So sad. Yet, so good.

This afternoon I watched a little of the Super-bowl playoff game between the Baltimore Ravens and the Indianapolis Colts. I immediately turned it off when I noticed that the score was Colts 6 to Ravens 0. Everything looked so lopsided in favour of the Colts. I could not stand to see the possibility of the Ravens loosing so I had to switch it off. For all I know the Ravens might have pulled through and be headed the Super-bowl. MORNING COMMUTE
I am on time for work. Right now I feel it is better to be laid off than fired from work.

AJ JONES & SONS COSTUME SHOP MYSTERY
This morning as the light rail train was passing by the AJ Jones and Sons Costume shop on Howard Street I noticed that the lights were on inside the store. This was very curious because it was 6:24 in the morning. In front of the store was this black guy wearing a black cap and a black pea coat and jeans. He was talking to someone inside the store. The guy inside the store was white and had a dog with him. The guy outside the store handed him something then the guy inside the store opened the door and examined it. What was going on at 6 in the morning? Was it a drug deal going down or something innocous. The guy inside the store was fully dressed so I assume that he was already up. Perhaps he even lives inside the costume shop. I suppose I will wait to see if anything odd happens around the costume shop tomorrow.

I NEED MY DIABETIC MEDICINE!
I find that it is difficult to get in touch with the company that handles my prescription copay. A couple of weeks ago they sent me a letter saying that from now on I will have to get my prescription filled directly from them instead of from my local pharmacy.

In other words I will have to get my Meformin, diabetic medicine, through the mail. They told me that it will take about two weeks for it to be activated. This is all well and good but right now I am one hundred percent out of medicine. I hate this situation. I would much prefer to simply go to the pharmacy than wait on the US Postal Service. God/Goddess only knows when I will get my medicine. Who knows I might drop dead of a diabetic coma waiting for it to arrive?

This morning I left out on time for work. I still feel frightened that I might be laid off and end up being homeless.

On a brighter note Simon is still alive! Ok, I know he is a toy golden retriever but still its nice to see that he is still “breathing” via his two D size batteries. Everytime, I see him I can not help petting him a bit as though he were a real dog.

Also last night I watched some episodes of Knowing Me Knowing You...With Allen Partridge. KMKY..WAP is a 90’s British comedy show starring comedian, Steve Coogan. The show is a parody of a TV chat show. I got the dvd from Netflix. One thing I can say about the shows I have seen thus far is that, Steve Coogan is absolutely hilarious. Watching these shows is the only thing thats preventing me from coming home, breaking down, and crying nonstop.

Oh, well I hope we do not have a meeting tomorrow at work saying that we are all fired and that the company will be closing down.

Today, I went to my Doctor’s appointment and also picked up my birthday present from the post office. The present I bought myself is a toy golden retriever from perfectpetzz.com I saw the fake sleeping dog in a catalogue and had to have one. Actually, I have wanted one since last year. I first saw one in a kiosk at Towson Town Mall. I thought it was so cute and life like. It was life like in the sense that you could see its body move up and down as it perpetually slept. However, I balked at the price offered at the mall. Oddly, I do believe that I am paying more for the dog than was offered at the kiosk....

MORNING COMMUTE:
This morning I was on time for work. This was all due to the fact that I was lucky enough to hail a cab. While in the cab I asked the driver about The Ravens. I am not a big time sports fan. However, I am very much interested in their chances to make it to the Super Bowl. My ex used to call me a fair weather sports fan. I only show interest in sports when it is near playoff season and my hometown team is involved.

Anyway, I asked the cabbie if he knew how many games the Ravens had to win to get into the Super Bowl. The cabbie began to stutter out his answer then after while the stuttering left him. I suppose not many female passengers ask him about sports. He told me that they had to win two more games. But that they would off on this Sunday. Then he went on to tell me more about the Ravens. When I left out the cab he told me to enjoy the games.

QUEST FOR A 2007 CALENDAR
Yesterday, I continued on my hunt for a suitable mini calendar for my cubicle. My hunt led me to the Towson Town Mall. While there I found a kiosk that still sold calendars. I spent a long time deciding between getting a Bob Marley, Elvis Presley or Marilyn Monroe calendar. In the end I took home the Elvis calendar. I bought it because it was the one that best fit in with my cubicle decor. My cubicle has an Elvis theme to it.

I should note that I picked up the calendar despite it being the type that I loathe. I loathe Elvis calendars that feature black and white photography when there are full colour versions of the same pictures available. To me it smacks of forced nostalgia. Whats so wrong about using the colour version of the same picture must everything be Photoshoped into fake nostalgia pieces. WHAT I AM WEARING:
Today, I have on Nike MaxAir shoes, a fair isle knit sweater of light blue, yellow, and white. I also have on a denim long sleeve shirt and blue jeans.

MORNING COMMUTE:
This morning I did everything on time. I woke up on time. I left out on time. I caught the bus on time. However, the train pulled off two minutes. I felt sad as I watched it pull off. Oh, well maybe I will be on time for work tomorrow.

QUEST FOR A 2007 CALENDAR
Yesterday, I was lucky to find a Maxfield Parrish wall calendar for my bedroom. I found the calendar at Borders by the Lutherville light rail stop. This makes two years in a row that I have found calendars featuring the work of artists I admire. Last year I found a Jack Vettriano mini-calendar that I kept in my cubicle. I wonder if next year will I be able to find a Patrick Nagel calendar? I suppose that the only way that that would happen is if an 80’s art revival started.

Anyway, now that I have a wall calendar for home all I need now is a mini calendar for my cubicle. While out shopping for the wall calendar I could not find a suitable mini-calendar anywhere. I hope that all the good ones have not been snatched up. The only ones I could find were of the Christian variety. I would feel rather depressed and borderline suicidal if I had one of those to look at all day at work. Oh, well maybe I will find something suitable tomorrow. Who knows maybe I will luck out and find a nice Lord of the Rings or Star Wars mini calendar.

WHAT I AM WEARING:
Today, I have on black slacks, a light blue and white top, and New Balance 653 shoes.

I am feeling a bit depressed about my upcoming birthday. The reason being is that it puts me a couple of more years closer to 40. Maybe I should take a more positive tack and start freaking out over the possibility of turning 80 and having to live in a nursing home.......

WHAT I AM WEARING:
Today, I have on black slacks, a blue turtleneck, a light blue and white zipper up sweater that has snowflakes and glitter on it. Its not the type of cardigan sweater I would normally wear because it lacks pockets. I also have on Nike MaxAir shoes.

I did not do much today. I just spent the day moping around the house listening to my compilation set of 1970s music from Time Life Books. Since I was born in the 70s and my birthday is coming up real soon I thought it would be fitting to listen to music from that era.
